Hotel Intercontinental l is where
the Top of the Mark sits just 21 floors above
Nob Hill. Most of the folks who occupy this club
are Internet moguls and yuppies. Named
after Mark Hopkins, the founder of the Central
Pacific Railroad, The Mark Hopkins Hotel opened
in 1926. During World War II, Pacific-bound servicemen
and their friends would make their way to the
Top of the Mark to have one last toast to the
Golden Gate before shipping out. The mythology
was that this toast at the Top would bring them
home. As these servicemen sailed below the Golden
Gate, wives and sweethearts gathered in the corner
of the Top gazing out the windows to watch them
go, earning the northwest corner the nickname
Weepers' Corner.
