The enormous worldwide interest in the death of Michael Jackson will create a surge in Internet use and could crash some servers. Adam Ostrow, Editor-in-Chief of the San Francisco Tour-based Mash able online social media guide said that he expected the Memorial Service to be the biggest event we’ve ever seen online. He also said that the event will test the infrastructure of the Internet and the websites broadcasting the service. Can the Internet accommodate such a rush of use? If you're reading this on the morning of June 7, it probably can.
The issue is complicated by the fact that the memorial service is happening during business hours in the US so many people will be at work rather than sitting at home in front of a TV. Workers will be sitting at their desks, but they'll probably be turning to the Internet to watch the event. Could this be the "perfect storm" that proves the Internet viable or causes it to massively crash?
May we all join in to honor the memory of Michael Jackson and the gifts he gave to us. And may this event help us to awaken to the fact that we are, in fact, One People.
