City officials and a dozen of other banks and credit unions has now launched an initiative on Thursday to help San Franciscans with low incomes and credit problems opening bank accounts as an alternative to using luxurious check-cashing services.
The program, called Bank on San Francisco, is the idea of City Treasurer Jose Cisneros. Along with the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Cisneros convinced banking institutions, such as Bank of America and Wells Fargo, to recognize applicants who have actually had problems opening or may be maintaining bank accounts in the past.
