The service from Sydney to San Francisco - resuming after a shatter of 12 years - will run three days a week but Australia's national airline is aiming to make it a daily service.
The new service has been urbanized so connections to other main US cities including Dallas, Chicago, Miami and Boston can be made speedily through local airlines.
The opening flight arrived in San Francisco yesterday with a high-powered reception of business leaders including San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Qantas' celebrity representative John Travolta and central Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran.
