It looked like the San Franciscans opposing against Stockton for the USS Iowa were jump for Davy Jones' locker Tuesday, but the Port of San Francisco let them come down off the board.
Port commissioners had been predictable to vote against berthing the historic World War II battleship after a staff report found the group, Historic Ships Memorial at Pacific Square, may not have money to make the Iowa work as a balanced museum.
Their "no" likely would have sunk the S.F. campaign lastingly. San Francisco's supervisors did their own loopy kamikaze on the Iowa idea last year.
