The ordinance, sponsored by Supervisor Sophie Maxwell, provides for penalties up to $1,000 against owners whose stores attract drug dealing, prostitution or other district problems. Maxwell said the legislation is not planned to force the conclusion of any of the estimated 900 liquor stores in the city but rather to reinforce regulations already required of liquor store owners by the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
