More than 6000 people gathered at San Francisco's Ocean Beach to celebrate the opening of the Sutro Baths, on Mar 14, 1896. It was an exaggerated public bath house envisioned and developed by the bizarre one-time mayor of San Francisco, Adolph Sutro. He is the one who built the Cliff House also. The Sutro Baths was a very large privately owned swimming pool complex in the San Francisco, California built in the late 19th century. The building housing the baths burned down in 1966 and was abandoned. The ruins may still be visited.
Just to the north of Cliff House, Sutro built the baths, which is also a popular attraction to San Francisco.
To make sure about the transportation to the baths and Cliff House, it remained reasonable for the general public; from downtown San Francisco, a trolley line was built by Sutro which was also accessible via the Cliff House Rail Road.
The enormous glass enclosed space has seven swimming pools at various temperatures. There were springboards, slides, high dive and a trapeze. Jointly, the pools can hold around 1.7 million gallons of water and it could be filled in one hour by high tides. There are almost 40,000 towels and 20,000 bathing suits for rent. The Baths can accommodate up to 10,000 people at a time.
