FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR ALCATRAZ COMBINATION TOURS

Q: Do I really want to go to Alcatraz as part of my San Francisco Vacation?

A: Yes! It's really well done. The whole day is prepared by the National Parks Service and they really nailed this exhibit. Unlike other exhibits prepared by the parks service in the U.S., the Alcatraz island tour is one where you get to walk through and be a part of whether it be going inside jail cells or walking throught mess hall - it's fantastic. They also offer a self guided tour with ear pieces that you listen to while you walk through and this audio tour is second-to-none.

Q: How far in advance should we make our booking?

A: There is a limit of only 3,000 people per day that can go to Alcatraz island and with over 200,000 daily visitors in San Francisco at one time, you can see the issue you are facing. We recommend booking your Alcatraz Tour Combo at least 14 days in advance or you are probably not going to go.

Q: Where do the tours begin?

A: All of our tours begin at the San Francisco Ferry Building. The Alcatraz Portion of the tour starts from Pier 33 (a 20 minute walk or a 5 minute Trolley Car ride from the Ferry Building.)
Be sure to go to the correct location for each tour. We cannot be responsible if you miss either tour due to going to the wrong place!

Q: What time will I go to Alcatraz?

A: We usually book the Alcatraz Ferry at either 10:00 am, 3:20 pm, 3:55 pm or 4:20 pm (Night Tour after October 25th) depending on availability. We regret that we cannot give you the option to choose your own time. Please note that by purchasing this tour package, you agree to go at the time we book for you.

Q: What if there are no tickets available the day I booked?

A: Occasionally, Alcatraz tickets are not available on the day you request. In that case, we will contact you to ask if you can go another day. If not, we will give you a full refund.

Q: What if my plans change or I miss the tour?

A: We must enforce a different refund policy for Alcatraz than for our other tours. All Alcatraz Tour Combos are 100% non-refundable.

Q: How long does it take to get to Alcatraz? How much time will we be there? What time will we return?

A: The ferry to Alcatraz (included in your ticket price) takes about 10 minutes. Once you arrive on Alcatraz island you are free to spend as much time as you wish and come back to the city on any return ferry. Return ferries depart approximately every 30 minutes. Most people spend about 2 hours on Alcatraz. You will be guided through your visit by National Park Service rangers and a self-guided audio tour, which is included in the price of your ticket.

Q: Is there food service on Alcatraz?

A: There is no food available on Alcatraz itself, but food is available at Pier 33 and on the Alcatraz ferry. In addition, Fishermans Wharf and Pier 39 are just a short walk from Pier 33, so you can go there before or after Alcatraz. You are welcome to take bottled water anywhere on Alcatraz.

Q: What about restrooms?

A: There are restrooms at Pier 33, on the ferry and on Alcatraz.

Q: What if I have mobility issues?

A: Alcatraz is wheelchair accessible, however, there is a steep uphill path leading from the ferry dock to the prison. A tram runs at least once an hour to take those with mobility challenges to and from the prison.
